Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated fury after the ex-president alleged a coalition of Democratic legislators of being "turncoats" and declared they should be detained and sentenced "through capital punishment" following their release of a disputed video.
The clip, published on earlier this week, features six Democratic lawmakers who formerly worked in defense or intelligence roles.
"Like us, you all made an pledge to defend and uphold this constitution," the lawmakers declared in the 90-second video. "At present, the risks to our democratic foundation are not only from foreign nations, but from domestically. Our laws are explicit, you can refuse illegal orders, you can reject improper directives, you must reject improper directives. No one has to carry out orders that contravene the statutes or our constitution."
The recorded statement seemed to trigger a angry response from the ex-president.
On Thursday morning, Trump posted on Truth Social: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional publication, he stated: "This represents really serious, and Risky to our Country. Their words cannot be allowed to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional post, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also redistributed a comment that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Following Trump's statements on that day, House Democratic leader published a combined announcement censuring the statements.
"Partisan aggression has no position in the United States," they stated. "Elected officials who appeared in the video all served our United States with exceptional national pride and excellence. We unequivocally censure Donald Trump's appalling and harmful calls for execution against congressional representatives, and call on Republican lawmakers to vigorously do the same."
The opposition officials also mentioned that they had been in touch with protective services "to make certain the security of these representatives and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must without delay remove these unhinged digital publications and retract his dangerous language before he causes harm," the statement stated.
The lawmakers who appeared in the video also issued a response.
"We identify as veterans and national security professionals who love this United States and made an vow to protect and uphold the founding document of the United States," they said. "Our pledge is permanent, and we intend to keep it. No intimidation, coercion, or call for violence will stop us from that important responsibility."
"What's most telling is that the former president considers it subject to penalty by execution for us to repeat the legal requirements," they continued. "Armed forces members should recognize that we have their protection as they fulfill their vow to the national charter and responsibility to obey only lawful orders. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our obligation."
They continued: "The entire nation must join forces and denounce the president's demands for our murder and ideological conflict. This is a moment for ethical certainty."
The Senate Democratic leader also censured Trump's statements and shared on digital platforms: "It's important to understand: the President of the United States is calling for the death of public representatives."
He stated: "This is an outright THREAT. Every Senator, every Representative, the entire nation – without partisan consideration – should censure this right away and without qualification."
The GOP leader supported Trump's assertion that the Democrats had been involved in "sedition", characterizing the video as "wildly inappropriate", stating: "It is very harmful, you have prominent officials of the legislature instructing troops to ignore directives, I think that represents historic in the nation's past."
The Conservative representative also allegedly informed journalists that in what he examined of Trump's posts, Trump was "describing the crime of sedition" but that "attorneys have to examine the terminology and establish all that."
During a administration briefing on that day, when asked by a reporter, "Would the president want to put to death elected officials?", the executive branch representative answered: "No."
"We should understand about what the president is responding to," the spokesperson declared. "You have current representatives of the US Congress who worked together to orchestrate a recorded statement to members of the national defense, to serving soldiers urging them to defy the executive's legal commands."
She added: "The purity of our defense system rests on the hierarchy, and if that structure is violated, it can result in fatalities, it can lead to chaos, and that's what these members of Congress ... are essentially encouraging."
