England's Assistant Coach Shares The Vision: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour.

A decade ago, Barry was playing in League Two. Currently, his attention is fixed supporting the England manager secure World Cup glory in 2026. His path from athlete to trainer began as an unpaid coach coaching youngsters. Barry reflects, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and it captivated him. He realized his purpose.

Rapid Rise

Barry's progression stands out. Starting with his first major job, he built a name through unique exercises and excellent people skills. His stints with teams led him to Chelsea and Bayern Munich, while also serving in roles with national teams for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached stars like top footballers. Today, as part of Team England, he's fully immersed, the peak in his words.

“Dreams are the starting point … Yet I'm convinced that passion overcomes challenges. You envision the goal then you break it down: ‘What's the process, each day, each phase?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. But dreams won’t get it done. It's essential to develop a structured plan enabling us for optimal success.”

Focus on Minutiae

Passion, particularly on fine points, characterizes his journey. Putting in long hours all the time, the coaching duo test boundaries. Their strategies include psychological profiling, a heat-proof game model ahead of the tournament in North America, and fostering teamwork. He stresses the national team spirit and rejects terms including "pause".

“This isn't a vacation or a pause,” Barry notes. “We needed to create an environment that the players want to be part of and where they're challenged that returning to club duty feels easier.”

Greedy Coaches

He characterizes himself along with the manager as “very greedy”. “We aim to control each element of play,” he declares. “We want to conquer every metre of the pitch and we dedicate long hours toward. Our responsibility not just to keep up with developments but to beat them and innovate. This is continuous with a mindset of solving issues. And it’s to make the complex clear.

“There are 50 days together with the team before the World Cup finals. We need to execute an intricate approach that offers a strategic upper hand and we have to make it so clear in that period. It’s to take it from idea to information to knowledge to execution.

“To develop a process enabling productivity during the limited time, we have to use the whole 500 we’ll have had from when we started. When the squad is away, it's vital to develop bonds with them. It's essential to invest time in calls with players, we have to see them in stadiums, feel them, touch them. If we limit ourselves to that time, we have no chance.”

World Cup Qualifiers

Barry is preparing for the final pair of World Cup qualifiers – against Serbia at Wembley and Albania in Tirana. England have guaranteed qualification with six wins out of six and six clean sheets. Yet, no let-up is planned; quite the opposite. This is the time to reinforce the team’s identity, for further momentum.

“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that our playing approach should represent the best aspects of English football,” Barry says. “The fitness, the adaptability, the robustness, the work ethic. The national team shirt must be difficult to earn yet easy to carry. It should feel like a cape not protective gear.

“To make it light, we have to give them a system that lets them to play freely like they do every week, that resonates with them and allows them to take the handbrake off. They need to reduce hesitation and more in doing.

“You can gain psychological edges you can get as a coach in attack and defense – starting moves deep, pressing from the front. Yet, in the central zone in that part of the ground, we feel the game has become stuck, notably in domestic leagues. Everybody has so much information these days. They know how to set up – mid-blocks, deep blocks. We are focusing to focus on accelerating the game across those 24 metres.”

Passion for Progress

His desire for improvement is relentless. When he studied for the Uefa pro licence, he was worried about the presentation, especially as his class contained luminaries like Lampard and Carrick. To enhance his abilities, he went into tough situations available to him to practise giving them. Including a prison in Liverpool, and he trained detainees for a training session.

He completed the course in 2020 at the top of the class, with his thesis – focusing on set-pieces, for which he analysed 16,154 throw-ins – became a published work. Frank was one of those impressed and he hired Barry as part of his backroom with the Blues. When Lampard was sacked, it was telling that the team dismissed virtually all of his coaches while keeping Barry.

The next manager at Chelsea became Tuchel, within months, they claimed the Champions League. After Tuchel's exit, the coach continued in the setup. Once Tuchel resurfaced at Munich, he got Barry out away from London to work together again. The Football Association consider them a duo like previous management pairs.
