Weather experts are saying a chilly beginning to the new year, with snow expected throughout a lot of the UK. Those celebrating are being urged to dress warmly as bitterly cold temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.
The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay celebrations are set to take place, following last year's calling-off. This proceeds amid weather alerts for snow over northern Scotland.
"An icy New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so extra layers will be needed," stated the Met Office.
In other parts of the UK, the weather is expected to be suited to fireworks shows, with a lack of precipitation and clear skies. Temperatures are due to be chilly, so extra layers a necessity, as per forecasters.
To the north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not expected to affect visibility for watching fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.
Heading into Friday, snow alerts are in place for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.
As 2026 begins, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are forecast to plummet as wintry showers and strong winds are likely to hit the north of the country.
Around 10cm of snow could accumulate to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.
In addition, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with temperatures forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Officials stated this indicated the weather was expected to lead to major effects across the NHS and care systems. This involves a likely increase in the fatality numbers among the elderly or unwell or those aged 65 or over.
The guidance for all is clear: to welcome the new year in safely, preparing for winter conditions is absolutely essential.
