American actor and playwright Jeremy O Harris, renowned for the Tony-nominated production Slave Play, was detained last month at an international terminal in Japan on allegations involving trying to bring in controlled substances into the country, authorities announced.
Harris, 36, was intercepted on 16 November at Naha airport, located on Okinawa, after a customs officer found 0.78 grams of a crystal material containing the synthetic narcotic MDMA in his tote bag, according to a customs spokesperson.
He was immediately arrested on suspicion of breaching Japan’s stringent Narcotics and Psychotropics Control Act.
Regional customs officials lodged a formal complaint with the public prosecutor to commence legal action against the playwright.
A law enforcement representative in Tomigusuku, Okinawa, verified that Harris remains in custody. The official did not elaborate on whether Harris has acknowledged the allegations.
At this time, it is not known whether the artist has secured legal representation in Japan. Requests for comment to his representatives were not answered at once.
Authorities stated Harris had arrived in Okinawa for tourism, having traveled from Britain with a layover in Taiwan. Okinawa is a popular resort destination south-west of Tokyo, famous for its coastlines and U.S. bases.
Japan enforces some of the most severe drug laws among developed nations. Possession and smuggling even minute quantities of banned drugs typically results in legal proceedings.
Foreign nationals detained by Japan for suspected drug offences in the past include former Australian rugby league player Blake Ferguson in 2021. In a historic 1980 case, ex-Beatles member Paul McCartney was detained after landing in Tokyo with marijuana and was afterwards banned from entering the country for a period of time.
Beyond his theatrical work, Jeremy O Harris is recognized for his performance in the series Emily in Paris and for serving as a producer on the HBO drama Euphoria.
