The Former French President to Pen Jail Diary Documenting His 20 Days Behind Bars

Nicolas Sarkozy will soon publish a book in the coming weeks named Diary of a Prisoner, chronicling the period endured in custody.

This news came just 11 days after the ex-leader was released while he appeals the court ruling on charges of unlawful coordination connected to efforts to obtain political financing from the regime of former Libyan leader.

Time in Custody: Personal Reflections

“Behind bars visibility is limited, and nothing to do,” he notes in a preview, indicating the memoir will focus on his reflections from isolation rather than a broader observation on the packed and struggling jail system in France.

“I forget silence, not present at the prison, where there is a lot to hear,” he states. “The racket is alas constant. Yet, similar to barren lands, personal reflection grows stronger behind bars.”

Court Appearance: Describing the Ordeal

During his plea for freedom, the former leader was present by video link from a room in prison, depicting prison life as exhausting. He expressed in court: “I want to pay tribute the correctional officers, displaying remarkable compassion, easing this difficult experience manageable – because it is a nightmare.”

“I never imagined that in my seventies, I’d be in prison. It’s a hardship I must endure. I confess it’s hard, it’s very hard. It affects one every inmate as it’s exhausting.”

Unprecedented Situation

He, who led the nation from 2007 to 2012, set a precedent as past president from the EU and the first postwar leader from France to serve time in prison.

Prior to imprisonment he mentioned he intended to spend the period to write a book.

Cell Library

It remains unclear whether he had time to go through the texts he took into prison: a life story of Jesus spanning two books and Alexandre Dumas’s novel The Count of Monte Cristo, where an innocent man is sentenced to jail later flees to seek vengeance.

Life in Confinement

He remained in solitary confinement to protect him in a room roughly 100 square feet including private facilities at La Santé prison in the city. Two bodyguards occupied a neighbouring cell.

Sources mentioned his diet consisted solely dairy snacks in prison because he feared meals provided might have been spat on. Although he had access for self-catering yet he declined, as per accounts. Unclear remains if the memoir includes his dietary choices.

Defense Viewpoint

His attorney, Christophe Ingrain each day during the incarceration, stated during proceedings security would be better released than inside. “There were threats against his life, has heard screaming after dark plus rapid actions in a neighbouring cell when a prisoner self-harmed.”

Legal Proceedings

Sarkozy went to prison last month when a French court imposed a half-decade term for criminal conspiracy in connection with efforts to acquire campaign funds during his election campaign.

He maintains his innocence and is contesting the ruling, with a new trial is scheduled for next spring.
