NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the rent-stabilised apartment that sparked debate in his run for office.
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for most New York City mayors after the post-war period.
However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central issue, hesitated to declare his residency plans promptly following his victory in November.
"This decision came down to the security of my family and the imperative to dedicating all of my focus on implementing the platform on affordability New Yorkers supported," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.
His home was in Astoria, Queens, a community famous for its abundance of immigrant communities and international dining.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for demonstrating the best of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"While I may no longer live there, Astoria will continue to reside a part of me and the work I do," he affirmed.
In his campaign, Mamdani connected his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his personal living arrangements.
Yet his rivals, including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the apartment although he is from a prominent family.
Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his tenure, which concluded in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a venue for civic gatherings, and championed significant upgrades of the historic mansion.
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his swearing-in on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment a stark contrast to his modest Astoria home.
Featuring butter yellow paint, green shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure overlooking the East River.
Internally, the lower floor of the classically designed mansion is appointed to reflect the home's original era.
The estate, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also has enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.
A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
The apartment he is leaving is under rent control, meaning the city sets limits on how much building managers can raise the rent each year.
New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the cost of housing outpaces what many can afford.
It was reported Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
