In October of last year, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the network introduced a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. In an era often defined by dark humor, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and turned it into a breakout hit.
In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."
In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and supported its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about observing this lovable family go about their everyday routines.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing layer of irony. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to experience the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
