It might not have been at the same level as pardoning festive fowl, but the county's top official conducted a Donald Trump moment this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued since the beginning of a second term in office.
“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “I hope she experiences a prosperous future away from worry.”
The gathering, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was founded to emulate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The swine, contributed by a first responder, was named for the modern linguistic fad of young people exclaiming “six-seven” – inspired by a musical verse – often without clear purpose. The trend became so widespread that a leading lexicon site recently made “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
This particular pig is now destined to live out its days at a rural sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to begin the end-of-year celebrations,” said the cafe owner, in a decidedly positive message.
“It captures the character of Miami: joyful, multicultural, and based in heritage that unite the community. Annually, we are honored to observe culture and compassion in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they marked the pig's pardon.
