The Siblings from the Dagestani Region Making Their Mark in MMA and with Man Utd.

Ibragim Ibragimov breaks into a smile as he considers how his clan's life has transformed since moving to England from Dagestan in 2017.

"I am fond of it here," the Professional Fighters League athlete remarks.

"My father and I always comment, 'this was the nation I should have been born in.'"

The young man left his homeland in the North Caucasus of Russia as his father believed a move spanning more than 3,000 miles would provide better career opportunities for him and his brothers.

The original idea was for Ibragim and his three brothers – Amir (17), Gazik (16), and Muhammad (15) – to complete school before enrolling in one of the nation's colleges.

However, reality has turned out quite different for the Ibragimov family.

Ibragim is now a pro mixed martial arts athlete and is regarded as one of the top talents in the PFL, a prominent MMA organization.

His brothers have chosen a separate path in sport and have all been contracted by Manchester United – with Amir aiming for a spot in the senior squad.

"The main goal for us is to extract everything out of our chosen fields," explains Ibragim.

"I hope them to play for all of the finest teams in the world. Now it is Man United, tomorrow it could be a another team."

From Wrestlers to Football Prodigies

Located in the south of Russia, Dagestan holds a mythical status among combat sports enthusiasts for generating a slew of UFC champions in the past few years.

The area has a rich tradition in grappling, thriving in the sambo discipline and producing numerous Olympic and world winners.

This success is no accident, though, as children from the region are frequently encouraged to begin combat sports, particularly wrestling, practically as soon as they can stand.

"As a a kid, my dad was constantly instructing me and my younger brothers that we needed to be powerful, first to protect yourself, your relatives, and your companions," says Ibragim.

"Therefore we all got used to combat, and which is why everyone knows how to fight in Dagestan. It's unsurprising."

"Amir was a highly skilled wrestler. You can see the transition from wrestling to football; clearly, it assisted my little brothers a great deal."

"Many of the footballers he comes up against lack the identical foundation he has. That's why he's stocky, powerful and incredibly driven – because of wrestling."

Amir was just nine years old when he was being tested at Sheffield United. Not knowing of his actual age, coaches grouped him with boys significantly older.

He was unfazed by the oversight and was more than capable competing against older players because of his background in wrestling.

"They thought Amir and I were the identical age, so the story goes," says Ibragim.

Amir was signed, along with Ibragim's younger brothers Gazik and Muhammad.

The clan's stay in South Yorkshire was brief, though, as just weeks after joining the Blades, Manchester United learned of Amir's talent and he transferred across the Pennines as a result.

"They played Manchester United in a tournament and Amir scored a spectacular free-kick," recalls Ibragim.

"One of their talent spotters watched him play and selected him immediately."

Six years after joining the Manchester United club and at the age of 15, Amir became one of the most youthful players in the club's records to train with the senior side when he did so in April 2023.

"Know what he told me? 'Here is where I should be'," Ibragim reveals.

"Is he able to be a first-team player for Manchester United? Absolutely. They should let all the youthful players get game time right now."

"In my opinion they would play less effectively than the current first-team players. I believe the young guys are hungrier than the present first-team players."

Following that, Gazik and Muhammad, the latter once part of the academy of Manchester City, have also made the move to Manchester United.

"Gazik, this youngster is talented," continues Ibragim.

"He learned every skill faster than everyone else. He's a good defender. He's going to be similar to a new Rio Ferdinand for Man United."

'A Goal' to Compete at the Theatre of Dreams

Ibragim has now moved to Manchester and spends most of his days honing his MMA abilities at Manchester Top Team.

In August, he passed three weeks in his homeland at Khabib Nurmagomedov's gym, assisting Islam Makhachev prepare for a late-year UFC title fight.

"I would never have thought I would be learning under Khabib," Ibragim says.

"He was the best fighter in the world – and we always used to look up to him when we were growing up."

"Today, I'm here in his gym and training with Islam Makhachev."

Fresh from working with two UFC titleholders from Dagestan, it is no surprise Ibragim states he is desperate to claim a world title of his own one day.

However that does not prevent him from sometimes fantasizing of representing United and stepping out on the historic turf at Old Trafford, similar to his brothers.

"I had a PlayStation at home and I constantly used to play as Man United, scoring goals with legendary players," he recalls.

"Today, for my brothers to be Man United players, it's like a dream come true."

"A fight at Old Trafford? It's a dream for me. I was speaking to the PFL officials about it to see if they would make it happen. It would be enormous."
