While Swimmers Escaped Attack, Widely-Shared Image Depicts Beach Patrol Sprinting ‘All Out’ In the Direction of the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong resident of Bondi, describes the renowned shoreline as her own backyard. On that particular weekend night, she, like many others in the area, noticed cracking sounds ringing out through the community.

“Everyone did, but I reasoned it was daylight and there was nothing visible,” Ching states. She left her home, she witnessed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The looks she saw told her a crisis was unfolding.

While standing on the street, conversing with a duo who had run up the hill still dripping wet, she noticed someone approaching at her rear. The person was a lifeguard, sprinting towards Bondi unshod from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while holding a medical device.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I only caught a glimpse of this streak in blue,” she recalls. “He was simply racing by. He was alone heading in the opposite way that everyone was trying to get away from, and hauling that sizeable pack and unshod … He’s running into something that certainly every fibre in your being would tell you to move in the other direction.

“Without a second thought, but just fully pedal to the metal running.”

An Iconic Image of Heroism During Crisis

The image taken by Ching of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as among numerous acts of courage in the following of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, another lifeguard, noted that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to assist the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to work with surf lifesavers, police and paramedics treating numerous victims.

Collective Outpouring and Assistance

Doolan’s story was just one of many to be shared by the local area, with the beach facility next to the scene of the attack transforming into a impromptu hospital. Accounts show that other team members were also seen responding bravely, such as rushing into the water to rescue people in distress.

Following the events, statements of appreciation circulated widely. A social media message expressed appreciation for the individuals who demonstrated that “goodness will always conquer hatred”.

The team of beach patrol later shared a message, explaining they were “still trying to comprehend what occurred”.

“We are grateful all for your thoughtful words and solidarity. We are overwhelmed by the care for our team,” the group wrote. “In time, we will tell our tales in the belief that it supports those impacted.”

Council Commendation

Waverley council, the local authority that employs many permanent beach safety officers, said that the staff performed exceptionally from the second the incident started until late that evening.

“People have shared so many moving accounts, but the viral picture of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help save lives is remarkable,” stated a council representative.

“The team exhibit dedication every day in maintaining the safety of our iconic coastlines protected for visitors, but what we saw on that evening should be highly praised.

“As we grieve and grapple with the terror of this heinous tragedy, I think it is important that we focus on just how much good we have seen in the presence of such hatred.”
