Woody Allen Delivers Moving Tribute to Diane Keaton

Following the demise of the celebrated actress at 79 years old, Woody Allen has released a lengthy tribute remembering her life and their enduring bond.

Remembering a Remarkable Collaboration

In a recently published article, the filmmaker, 89, described their time together from their initial meeting in 1969 during rehearsals for his play Play It Again, Sam, spanning their half-decade romance and the eight films they collaborated on.

“Over the years, I created films for an audience of one, Keaton herself,” Allen expressed. “I ignored a press commentary of my work and was concerned exclusively with what she had to say about it.”

He further noted that she was “unique among people the earth has seen or is unlikely to ever see again,” and that “her presence and joy illuminated any space she entered.”

Unexpected Loss and Powerful Recollections

Keaton died after taking ill at her house in Los Angeles. She had been less visible for a period of time, and a confidant indicated that although no ailment had been made public, her condition worsened quickly, with many of her close friends not knowing that she was ailing.

Her demise nonetheless seemed to be a jolt even to her dearest friends.

“Just recently, the world was a place that featured Diane Keaton,” writes Allen. “Now it’s a world that is without her. Therefore, it’s a drearier world. Nevertheless, there are her movies. And her great laugh still lingers in my head.”

Staunch Allegiance During Allegations

The actress continued to be a staunch supporter of Allen after the revival of a claim from 1992 directed toward him by Dylan Farrow amid a legal dispute.

The accusation was carefully probed and then rejected by two official bodies, and no charges were brought.

“Woody Allen is my friend and I maintain faith in him,” Keaton remarked of the allegation when it picked up renewed momentum as part of the #MeToo movement. “It might be of interest to take a look at the 60 Minutes interview from 1992 and draw your conclusions.”

Continuing Influence

In his personal account, Allen referred to her as his “guiding light”; the figure whose opinion means the most.

Speaking in the previous year, she noted: “He was so incredible. It consistently felt really special to be with Woody. He was fantastic. He was everything, and he still is [so] to me. He offered me endless opportunities. He truly did. Woody kept it relaxed. That made a significant difference.”

Intimate Experiences

His tribute features recollections of their time together outside work, including a notable Thanksgiving engaging in cards with her family, and remarks of their connection: “We had a many memorable intimate times together and eventually we both went our separate ways, and what led to our split only God and Freud might be able to determine.”

In 2017, Allen overcame his aversion to ceremonies to present Keaton with the AFI life achievement award, stating: “The instant I met her, she was a tremendous inspiration to me. A large part of what I’ve done in my life I credit, for sure, to her. Viewing life through her eyes. She really is astonishing. This is a individual who is superb in all she does.”
